I am an absolute beginner in Linux, so I don't event have a preference but I am learning it in CenTOS because I want to learn shared server administration.

hehe good for you.

There are many guides online to get some help. Docs or even support channels in irc are available to help you. i could advice you just use it the more you can.. Even if you read 10 books about something, if you never use it you will never learn it.

Thanks

Hi,

Although not Linux per say, FreeBSD is tops, as well as (Linux this time) Debian. I do however use Ubuntu mainly at the moment which is a very close spinoff of Debian.

I would recommend a Live CD to anyone who wishes to "test-drive" a Linux distribution for themselves, as it does not require an installation or modify any system data / file systems as it runs mainly from memory

Mainly, I like centOS because of it's stability and security. It's basically Red Hat linux. I use it for all of my servers and production environments. For personal users, I like Ubuntu or Debian. They are both good as well. A live CD is a perfect way to try out the linux before you end up installing it. Also, you can use VMware and have a virtual linux running. I've installed many old versions of windows and linux into VMware to test issues I come across. Although Windows 98 is out of date, sometimes I need to refer to it for issues. Vmware comes in handy.
